Srinagar: Soldiers from army’s 9 Rashtria Rifles opened fire on a group of protesters in the highway township of Qazigund Monday evening, leaving two civilians, including a woman dead.
According to the reports, armys counterinsurgent force opened fire on people who attacked on an convoy with stones near Chowgam bridge. Two civilians were killed on the spot while at least seven others were injured.
The deceased have been identified as 25 year old Showkat Ahmad son of Ghulam Hassan Ittu and Syeda Bano (45) wife of Hassan Mir, both residents of Cheirut Qazigund, police sources said.
Giving details a police official said that protesters resorted to stone-pelting on Army men who were busy clearing the road that had been blocked by youth near Chowgam bridge. In retaliation soldiers opened fire that resulted in the death of two persons.
Seven of the injured were shifted to SMHS Srinagar. They have been identified as Basit Ahmad, Mohammad Abbas, Javed Ahmad Wani, Neelufar Akhter and Ashfaq Ahmad while the identity of two others could not be confirmed immediately.
Elsewhere, curfew and shutdown in Kashmir Valley entered 10th day on Monday. The curfew was clamped on Kashmir after mass unrest broke out over the killing of militant commander Burhan Muzzafar Wani on 8th of July.
With todays two deaths the death toll since July 9 has gone upto 47. 5000 people have reportedly been injured mostly having received bullet or pellet injuries. Pellets have blinded more than two dozen youth as well.
