Uncle’s Kamal Leaves Omar At Wits’ End

SRINAGAR (ONS) – Faced with yet another juicy nugget from his ‘irrepressible’ uncle, chief minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday admitted in exasperation that Dr. Mustafa Kamal was making things difficult for him.

“Funny thing is I don’t need anyone to make things difficult for me when I have relatives to do it for me,” Abdullah tweeted after Dr. Kamal’s purported “India as enemy of Kashmiris” remarks.  

“They say never work with animals and children. I think it is safe to add relatives to that list as well,” he wrote.

Television networks went to town claiming that Dr. Kamal had termed India as the enemy of Kashmiris at a public meeting in Kishtwar this Sunday.

While addressing party workers, Kamal had said that by shying away from signing ‘no war treaty’ with Pakistan, India was the enemy and not Pakistan. Kamal also said that presence of Indian army in Kashmir was the biggest stumbling block.

“We do not know (what) the exact reasons (for) why India was not signing no-war treaty (with Pakistan),” Dr Kamal was quoted saying. “If India will continue to raise this issue then I have no hesitation in saying that Pakistan is not our enemy. Our enemy is our own country.” The entire world, Dr Kamal said, is seeking resolution to Kashmir issue. “We have opened our border to carry out trade activity with Pakistan. We could have introduced some more relaxations,” he said. 

Kamal had also said that Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi “has no role in running the Jammu and Kashmir government”. His statement came in response to a remark by J&K Congress chief Saifuddin Soz, who said Gandhi was not happy with the governance in the state. 

Kamal hit out at his coalition partner Congress and main opposition, PDP, saying “coalition is compulsion for us” and “we have plunged into power two keep away both of our enemies from each other, otherwise both had numbers to finish us.”

Channels aired footage clearly showing Kamal speak of “apna hee mulk” (one’s own country) as the enemy of Kashmir as, according to him, it had kept the Kashmir issue hanging.

Nearly, a year ago NC president Farooq Abdullah had asked his younger brother Mustafa Kamal to quit the party posts of additional general secretary and chief spokesman hours after he made a derogatory remark on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Kamal was then advised to exercise restraint and follow the party line on all issues. 

Farooq Abdullah yesterday termed Kamal’s lattest remarks as “irresponsible”.

“His (Kamal’s) statement is irresponsible. Delhi has never been the enemy of Kashmiris,” he had said.

Kamal Unapologetic

National Conference was facing an awkward situation became evident Tuesday when the ruling party first announced that the additional General Secretary Mustafa Kamal will be holding a press conference and later called newspaper offices announcing its postponement. A party spokesman later said the press conference will be now held on Wednesday.

However Kamaal remained unapologetic. 

While reacting to Chief Minister and his nephew Omar Abdullah’s tweet, Kamaal told Times Now TV channel that he was not the trouble maker for Omar but it was very unfortunate to term him as an anti-national. 

NC Must Clear Stand: Azad

Taking a strong exception to NC leader Mustafa Kamal’s remark on Indian position on Kashmir, Union minister Gulam Nabi Azad tonight asked the coalition partner in J&K to clear its stand on the issue.

“We have taken a strong exception to Mustafa Kamal’s remarks. This is serious issue. This not the first time that this gentleman (Kamal) has been giving statements like this,” PTI quoted Azad as saying.

Azad said it is high time that NC should clear its stand on which side of the page they are.

“Individual statements can be tolerated but no Indian can tolerate anti-Indian statements. We cannot tolerate it”, he said.
