Brexit Effect: NC Wants Referendum On Autonomy

Srinagar: A day after the British choose to quit the European Union, the National Conference looked inspired by the Brexit referendum. On Saturday, the NC leader and former spokesman, Tanvir Sadiq bounced off the idea of holding referendum on “restoration of autonomy or pre-1953 position” in restive Jammu and Kashmir.

“Why not Referendum on restoration of autonomy or pre-53 status in Jammu & Kashmir #ReferendumDebate,” Sadiq tweeted on his social media account. The idea instantly went viral among other faces in the party.

NC’s women wing leader Sara Hayat Shah shared Sadiq’s post on her Facebook account saying “I endorse his point.”

While many other NC leaders and supporters shared the idea online, it drew mixed reaction from the netizens.

“Why not a referendum for Kashmir’s self Determination,” said Adil Haroon while Adil Amin sought “A plebiscite.”

Ashok Koul, a Pandith responded saying: “India is not a union.”

Surya Samaddar proposed that there should be referendum on the trifurcation of state into Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. “Referendum on Trifurcation of State? Referendum on separation of Jammu? Referendum on separation of Ladakh and its UT status? Please don’t choose convenient referendum,” he reacted.

Another Facebook account holder Rakesh Agarwak said there was a need for devolution of power.  “Sara, devolve power to the state, city and village level. Let only critical areas such as defense, justice and foreign relations remain with the center. Even tax collection may be taken away from the center,” he said.

For most others it was time for typical NC bashing.

“NC was in power for six years, why didn’t you suggest it then. It is usual theory while in opposition. Mehbooba were suggesting same talks while in opposition,” said Bashir Ahmed.

“Haha seriously this is hilarious! Of all the people, NC is saying that! You people eroded autonomy like trash, NC literally sold Kashmir in every decade,” said Haseeb Nazir.

Some others tried to defend the idea. “Why do we all see Omar Abdulah as one amongst the flock. Why should we not see him different and see if he can lead our emotional thoughts in right direction,” Sheikh Imran said.

Off late, Jammu & Kashmir’s special status is taking centre stage once again. Last month the opposition National Conference submitted a resolution on autonomy for the ongoing Assembly session while independent legislators accused the PDP-BJP alliance of diluting it.

“There is an onslaught on Article 370 in the name of National Food Security Act (NFSA), separate colonies for Pandits, and National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). It has become imperative to preserve Article 370,” NC legislator Ali Muhammad Sagar recently told reporters.

The NC has submitted a resolution where it has sought the House’s support to “impress upon the Government of India to implement the autonomy resolution, which seeks [a return to the] pre-1953 position, as passed in the year 2000.” The resolution passed by the Assembly was subsequently rejected by Parliament
