The Commonwealth of Learning (COL) has appointed Dr Shahid Rasool as Director, Commonwealth Educational Media Centre of Asia (CEMCA).
Dr Shahid is first Kashmiri to whom the COL has offered a Directorship.
He will be joining his new assignment in first week of June, a statement issued by University of Kashmir said Saturday evening.
CEMCA was established by the COL as a regional centre to promote meaningful, relevant and appropriate use of Media and Technology to serve the educational and training needs of the Commonwealth Member States of Asia.
Located in New Delhi, the CEMCA works in eight Commonwealth Countries of Asia including Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia and Singapore.
President and Chief Executive Officer of COL, in the appointment offer mentions, Dr Shahid Rasool will gain commonwealth wide experience to promote the meaningful, relevant and appropriate use of media and technology to serve the educational and training needs of the commonwealth member states of Asia.
While responding to the offer, Dr Shahid said the new position would allow him to contribute at a much higher level and at the same time help him gain further knowledge, experience and exposure at international level.
I see this as an opportunity to practically understand emerging trends in media and use of technology for education in Commonwealth and in the developed world, he said.
Dr Shahid is presently working as Director Educational Multimedia Research Centre at the University of Kashmir and is a former US Fulbright Fellow in Communication Technology.
He has done MA, PhD in Mass Communication and Journalism from University of Kashmir and M S in Communication Technology from Syracuse University, USA.
Recipient of many awards, he has over 24 years of experience in research, teaching, production, and direction of educational films at EMMRC television production and research centre.
Having served on various professional boards and committees at national level he has authored various research papers, reports and a book on educational television.
