Dhaka:: A special tribunal in Dhaka on Tuesday sentenced four ‘Razakars’ to death and handed a life term to one for war crimes committed in 1971.
The International Crimes Tribunal-1 found them all of them guilty on seven charges of mass killing, murder, confinement, torture, arson and looting pressed against them, reports the Daily Star.
The four sentenced to death are Gazi Abdul Mannan, 88, who said to be a commander of the Razakar camp, Nasiruddin Ahmed, 62, his brother Shamsuddin Ahmed, 60, and Hafiz Uddin, 66 and the one given imprisonment until death is Azharul Islam, 60.
Apart from Shamsuddin, all the others are on the run.
The three-member tribunal was led by Justice Anwarul Haque, who began the day dictating out the 330-page verdict summary.
The verdict was on hold after until both sides completed arguments on April 11.
Apart from ordering their immediate arrest, the court has also directed authorities to seek help from Interpol if necessary.
The convicts can be either hanged by rope or gunned down, on terms of execution.
The accused are charged for killing of eight people and injuring of another of four villages on November 12; killing of Miah Hossain of Aila village on November 13; abduction and killing of Abdur Gafur of Kalatali on September 26; abduction, torture and killing of Fazlur Rahman of Atkapara on August 23; killing of Paresh Chandra Sarkar of Ramnagar on September 7; torture and killing of Abu Bakar Siddique and Rapali Miah on August 25, and arson and vandalism in Atkapara on September 15.
