Organisation of Islamic Cooperation or (OIC) founded in 1969 by 57 Muslim countries. The organisation represents the collective voice of Muslim world and works to safeguard the interests of Muslim world.
At 13th OIC summit held in Istanbul from 10th to 15th April, OIC affirmed its support to the Kashmir struggle and called upon UN for implementation of Security Councils relevant resolutions on Kashmir i.e. Right of Self Determination through UN supervised Plebiscite. The conference called on New Delhi to implement these resolutions. It further reminded the international community of its duty to ensure implementation of these resolutions. The conference urged international community that freedom struggle of Kashmir must not be equated with terrorism. It further called upon India to allow OIC Fact Finding Mission & International human rights groups access to Indian Occupied Kashmir. It also appeals to member states and Muslim institutions to grant scholarships to Kashmiri students in different universities in OIC countries. The secretary general of OIC affirmed OICs continued support to the people of J&K for realization of their rights in accordance with UN. He requested OIC member states, particularly having good relations with India, to urge India to respect the rights of Kashmiri people.
But this is not for the first time that OIC affirmed its support for Kashmir. They are doing so since decades. The question arises what is its impact on India? Does OICs statements really matter for India? Does OIC really mean its statements or it is just a formality that they are fulfilling? After OICs statement reaction from India was as expected. According to India and I quote Islamic summit has no locus-standi on Kashmir. Reacting strongly India termed the references made by OIC as Incorrect and misleading and asked it to refrain from making such statements. Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup said we completely reject all such references regarding matters internal to India. Even someone from India has said that India long stopped issuing knee-jerk reactions to the resolutions on J&K passed at the behest of Pakistan by various OIC meetings. Indian analysists even said that the real story of deliberations is not about J&K but the new realization with OIC of growing international irrelevance. The world has never taken OIC seriously is the only Part of the problem. The members themselves do not attach much political weight to the organization and its resolutions. These statements from India reflects the clear idea that how much OIC matter for India.
The time has come for OIC to take some concrete and practical steps about Kashmir issue. Take international community into confidence and put pressure on India to sort out the issue of disputed territory. These rhetoric speeches and just for formality summits is not going to bother India at all. As saying goes where there is a will there is a way.
