HANDWARA: Army Friday claimed that it killed two militants during a midnight operation in North Kashmirs Handwara town of District Kupwara.
The information about the nocturnal gun battle provided by some Defence officials stated that militants attacked an Army patrolling party from 21 RR near Pathwadar Bala in Handwara and shortly after the exchange of fire between the militants and the government forces, militants sneaked into Beighmohalla hamlet.
During the night long operation, there was exchange of fire during wee hours in which two militants were killed. Defense officials told CNS that the slain militants were affiliated with militant outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba and both were non-locals.
Sources said that the two militants killed in Handwara were part of a group comprising of at least 8 militants.
A police handout said that, two foreign militants were killed in an encounter with police and security forces in Waderbala area of Handwara. Acting on specific information about the presence of terrorists, Handwara police assisted by 21 RR started cordon and search operation in Waderbala, jurisdiction of Police Station Handwara. During the searches,the militants fired upon the joint party of police and security forces. The fire was retaliated and an encounter ensued.Two foreign foreign were killed in the encounter.
Two AK 47 rifles, 06 AK magazines, 04 UBGL, 46 AK rounds, 02 Radio sets, 02 maps, 02 pouches and a diary was recovered from the encounter site.
The identity of these militants is being ascertained.
