Srinagar: Shikara Workers Union Ghat number one Tuesday staged protest in Dalgate area of Srinagar city against delay in compensation for losses suffered by them during devastating floods in September 2014.
Raising anti-government slogans, the aggrieved Shikara owners blocked road resulting in disruption in vehicular movement.
Government has failed to fulfill its promise of providing compensation to us. Ironically, despite passing of over a year since floods, Government has left us to fend for ourselves, they said.
They said during their meeting with State Governor NN Vohra, the Governor had passed directions to Commissioner Secretary Tourism to provide financial assistance to the tune of Rs 50,000 for repair of Shikaras and Rs 50,000 to those whose shikaras have suffered damages. Despite the directions from the Governor, no financial assistance was given to them, the protesters told CNS and appealed Governor to look into the matter.
Later, the protesters dispersed off peacefully after some senior police and civil officials assured to redress their grievance. (CNS)
