Srinagar:Several areas surrounding picturesque Dal Lake Friday observed a shutdown to protest against Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA) for not allowing them to carryout reconstruction works of their residential houses.
Eyewitnesses told CNS that locals from Nishat, Brein, Shalimar, Harwan and other adjoining areas of Foreshore road remained shut while people staged demos to impress upon LAWDA to permit them to go for reconstruction of their houses, which according to them were damaged in 2014 floods.
For permission purposes we have to complete lengthy formalities and it takes not less than six months to complete the procedure. The lengthy process irks us, said a local.
The protesters said that renovation and repairing of houses is not banned by any court. Court has banned new construction falling within the 200 metre around Dal, still we are not allowed to repair our dilapidated houses, they said.
Vice Chairman LAWDA categorically said that no construction or reconstruction of houses will be allowed in no construction zone. It is a non-permissible area. Already vested interests have vandalized the Dal and green belt area. Shutdown and protest politics will not work. We are keen to save green belt especially Dal Lake that is our asset, he said. (CNS)
