KULGAM: Following growing incidents of cattle theft in different hamlets of South Kashmirs Kulgam district, hundreds of villagers Monday staged a massive protest outside Mini Secretariat Kulgam alleging inability of Police to trace cattle smugglers have encouraged them to an extent they stole sheep, cows and oxens in broad day light.
Eyewitnesses told CNS that residents from different hamlets of Kulgam district including Chawalgam, Okai, Adijan, Matibugh, Milow, Bumhrath, Guddar and Khandeypora assembled outside District Development Commissioners office and protested against the increasing incidents of animal theft and demanded administration to take appropriate measures to stop the menace. Scores of animal theft incidents have taken place in different villages over the last few weeks, depriving poor villagers of cattle worth millions of rupees and source of livelihood. We caught some cattle thieves during late hours at Adijan village and handed them over to Police Station DH Pora. To our surprise and shock police let them go without investigating the matter, the protesters alleged and warned to block the road on daily basis if thieves are not identified and arrested.
Deputy Commissioner Kulgam assured the protesters that culprits will not be spared. He directed police to constitute special team to trace and nab the active gang. DySP Headquarters Ashfaq Aalam refuted the allegations of protesters saying that the alleged burglars handover to police by locals turned out to be fishermen.
