Srinagar (ONS) – Nearly 500 doctors and paramedics who had left the state in 1990 and are receiving salaries since without work have been ordered by the government to report for duty immediately or take voluntary retirement.
Most such employees belong to the migrant Pandit community, and the government said that it could no longer withstand the burden of paying salaries to non-working personnel.
Out of the 500 medical and paramedical staffers, 100 are doctors who are running private clinics in New Delhi and other cities in the country.
The order for their return, issued on September 28, had given them until the second week of October to comply, but the date has now been extended to one month.
Since hospitals in the state face a shortage of doctors and other staff, the government has decided to utilise the services of all doctors, paramedics and ministerial personnel to improve their functioning, the order had said.
It said proceedings against the personnel would begin if they failed to reply within the stipulated time.
The states secretary for health, MK Dviwedi, said that the government could not continue to pay salaries to employees which did not work for it.
The government has been bearing the burden of their salaries for several years, he said. But it can do so no longer.
