SRINAGAR: Large number of devotees Monday thronged the shrine of Hazrat Syed Yaqoob Sahibs shrine at Sonawar in Srinagar, as week-long Urs celebrations of the Sufi mystic continue across the valley.
The devotees, including women and children, offered prayers at the shrine, which resounded with the hymns, recitations and chants of holy verses and special prayers for peace and tranquility of the state.
A good number of non-Muslims also paid obeisance at the shrine, signifying syncretic and tolerant message of Sufi saints which transcends beyond religions.
The annual Urs Mubarak celebrations of the Sufi saint are held every year from 11 Rabi-us-Sani (fourth month of the Islamic calendar) and lasts seven days.
The main function which is expected to draw thousands of devotees from across the Kashmir will be held on 17 Rabi-us-Sani (Thursday) with traditional devotion and fervour, during which the devotees will be treated to a glimpse of the saint’s relics.
