AntiguaWest Indies veteran left-hand batsman and former captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul has conveyed his decision to retire from international cricket.
The middle-order bastman whose nickname was “Tiger”, notified the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) of his decision to retire in an email.
Chanderpaul, who made his international debut in March 1994 against England in Georgetown went on to become the second highest run scorer in Tests for his country.
With 11,867 runs from 164 Test matches at an average of 51.37, Chanderpaul is just 86 runs short of Brian Lara, who is the highest run scorer for West Indies in the longer format.
The 41-year-old, who has scored 30 Test hundreds and 66 fifties last appeared for West Indies in the Test match against England in Bridgetown in May 2015.
However, the West Indies selectors dropped Chanderpaul for the 2015 Frank-Worrell Trophy against Australia and he has not played another match since then.
Even in the One-Day International format, Chanderpaul has a formidable record with 8778 runs from 268 games with 11 hundreds and 59 fifties.
In a media release the WICB president Dave Cameron recognized the achievements of Chanderpaul and wished him the best for the future.
The WICB acknowledges the invaluable contribution Shiv has made to the game globally and we wish him all the best.
In an international career which spans more than 21 years, Chanderpaul has also featured in five World Cups between 1996 and 2011 and played under eleven captains.
