SRINAGAR: Life in city centre Lal Chowk and its adjoining areas was affected on Wednesday due a separatist-sponsored strike call to mark 26th anniversary of Gawkadal massacre here. On this day in 1990, more than 50 civilians were butchered by Para-military Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) men after they resorted to indiscriminate firing on a procession in Gawkadal area of Lal Chowk.
Shops and other business establishments remained closed in Lal Chowk, Budshah Chowk, Maisuma, Gawkadal, Residency Road and Abi Guzar area. Private vehicles plied on roads normally. Authorities had deployed heavy contingents of police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Lal Chowk and its adjoining areas to thwart any protest demonstration.
Scores of separatist leaders affiliated with different organizations including Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front, Peoples Political Party, Hurriyat G, Islamic Political Party, Democratic Political Movement visited Gawkadal and offered special prayers in favour of victims.
JKLF, PPP and Hurriyat G activists organized protest marches to mark the day. The protesters clashed with police in Maisuma prompting police to brust some tear smoke shells. (CNS)
