CHADOORA: People observed a complete shutdown in Sogam Chadoora in Central Kashmirs Budgam district on Wednesday who opposed the laying of water pipeline from Doodhganga meant to supply water to Old Airport and adjoining areas. Locals of Sogam and Marabla areas of Chadoora alleged that despite assurances from former Minister and PDP leader the work on the scheme has been commenced again.
Amid launching of signature campaign against the water pipeline scheme the local staged a protest against the administration while all the shops and business establishments remained shut in the area.
The locals alleged this water pipeline scheme will cause acute water shortage during the peak irrigation season.
We started a signature campaign against the scheme as it will affect at least 52 villages. The Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA) has deceived the government as well as the Asian Development Bank which has funded the said project. The Agency did not take people on board before starting work on the water pipeline scheme, a protester told CNS.
The protesters alleged that ERA is working against the wishes of people and for this purpose this agency has been taking shelter of police.
Protesters claimed that, If they will construct the tributary from Doodhganga, there will be no water available for us to irrigate our lands. We already have shortage of water and this scheme will cause more droughts like situation, they said. (CNS)
