SRINAGAR: At least two elderly women, one of them seriously, were injured after police allegedly lobbed teargas shells to disperse them after the protesters blocked traffic on Boulevard road in Nishat in the outskirts of Srinagar city.
Protesters mostly women were protesting against Power Development Department for installing insulated power lines in the area to prevent power-pilferage.
The protesters claimed that the move is aimed at to loot the poor consumers. The protesters blocked the traffic prompting police to resort to tear-gas shelling.
According to the eyewitnesses, two women were injured in police action. An elderly woman Khadija Bano of Brein Nishat fainted after she was injured. Police shifted her to SMHS hospital where her condition is stated to be stable.
Another injured woman was identified as Raja Begum of Laam Nishat.
Reports said that the PDD is installing insulated power lines in the area to prevent power-pilferage which has angered the locals.
Police had use teargas shells to disperse women protesters during the demonstration.
