BrisbaneAustralia chased down a record total of 309 runs on Friday after comfortable seven wicket win at Gabba, as Rohit Sharmas another ton proved unproductive for India.
Earlier in the day, Indias total of 308 for eight was set-up by a second consecutive hundred from Rohit Sharma and fifties from Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane.
India won the toss and opted to bat first under overcast conditions. Shikhar Dhawan (6) gave his wicket away early, edging a Joel Paris (1-40) delivery to Matthew Wade. Rohit (124) provided some momentum with a boundary and a six in the sixth over.
By the end of the powerplay, India scored 47 for the loss of a wicket. Rohit and Kohli (59) continued from where they left off in the previous game and put on a 50-run stand in 57 balls.
Rohit reached his fifty in 61 balls and Kohli soon followed him with a 60-ball half-century. The Indian Test captain attempted a second run off a pull shot and was run out in the 24th over.
India reached 142 for two at the half-way mark. Rahane (89) joined hands with Rohit and their 50-run stand came up in just 56 balls.
In the 37th over, Rohit completed his second consecutive century on the tour just after India crossed the 200-run mark. The Australian bowlers did well to restrict India from running away with the match by bowling tight lines.
Rohit and Rahane began to accelerate as they brought up their 100-run stand in 99 deliveries. Rahanes run-a-ball fifty also came up at the same time.
In the 43rd over, Rohit was run out when a straight drive from Rahane was deflected onto the stumps by the bowler at the non-strikers end.
MS Dhoni (11) lasted just 10 balls and India lost Rahane and Manish Pandey in the 49th over. Australia conceded just four runs in the final over and took two wickets as India posted just 308 for eight.
James Faulkner (2-64) took two wickets while Paris, Hastings (1-46) and Scott Boland (1-64) took one wicket each.
While attempting the highest-ever chase at The Gabba, Australia got off to a slow start. Barinder Sran (0-51) and Ishant (1-60) bowled good lines to restrict the hosts to 40 for naught in the powerplay phase.
Two overs later, Ishant dropped Marsh (71) giving the left-hander a reprieve. Without taking many risks, Marsh and Aaron Finch (71) made a steady start as Australia reached 93 for naught after 20 overs.
Finch plundered Umesh Yadav (1-74) for two boundaries and a six to complete his fifty, taking Australia past 100 in the process.
Marsh also brought up his fifty and it was here where Australia began to put the foot down on the gas.
Ravindra Jadeja (1-50) went for 15 runs in the 23rd over but had the last laugh as Finch was caught at long off thanks to a stupendous catch from Rahane.
Pandey dropped Marsh in the slips off Ishants bowling in the 28th over. However, he fell to Ishant an over later, top-edging a delivery to covers.
A 78-run stand between Steven Smith (46) and George Bailey (76 not out) ensured Australia stayed on course for a win.
Smith was castled by Yadav in the 41st over, but Bailey went on to complete his fifty with a six down the ground.
Along with Glenn Maxwell (26 not out), Bailey ensured that Australia chased down their second successive 300-plus total with six balls to spare.
Ishant, Yadav and Jadeja had a wicket apiece. Rohit was awarded the man of the match for his century.
Earlier, India made 8 for 308 thanks to yet another Rohit Sharma century (124), with Virat Kohli (59) and Ajinkya Rahane (89) making crucial contributions.
But Australian openers Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh both struck 71 runs each, before George Bailey compiled a quickfire 76 not out to guide Australia home.
Earlier, Australia made three changes to the side that won the first ODI by five wickets. Shaun Marsh has replaced opener David Warner (paternity leave), all-rounder John Hastings slots in for Mitch Marsh and paceman Kane Richardson is in for Josh Hazlewood.
Marsh and Hazlewood have been rested. India made one change, slotting in paceman Ishant Sharma for Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Sharma returns from a finger injury.
Rohit Sharma was adjudged man of the match for another ton. With the seven wicket win Australia has taken a 2-0 ODI series lead.
On Sunday, India would like to bounce back in third ODI at Melbourne.
