PULWAMA: As the shutdown in South Kashmirs Pulwama district entered into 7th day against the police rejection to allow people to erect Martyrs Memorial in the district, Police installed food stalls where from large number of people made purchases of essential food items.
According to the eyewitnesses, Police Wednesday came to peoples aid after it installed food stalls at Rajpora Chowk of the district. Large number of people thronged to these food stalls and purchased eatables including vegetables, pulses and other essential items. Since December 25, the day when Omais Ahmed, a LeT militant was killed normal life restored for only a single day. Due to continuous disruption and shutdown, there is acute shortage of eatables and medicines in the district.
The shutdown call has been forwarded by group of youth who wish to erect Martyrs Memorial in Shaheed Park, the move resented by police. The Martyrs Memorial carries the images of militants. It will have negative impact on the youth if we allow it. We dont want youth get inspired from these slain militants, a police official said adding that those youth who insist on their demand are backed by militant outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba.
However, locals see otherwise and believe that there is nothing wrong if they will be allowed to erect memorial. The slain militants are our own children. They are locals, loved and respected by all, said a respectable citizen of the district.
Meanwhile, the scores of youth force all the banks including Jammu Kashmir Bank, LIC office to close their business till Martyrs Memorial is not erected in the district. Witnesses said that group of youth entered several banks and LIC office and asked employees to shut their offices.
