NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday assured his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi that Pakistan will take prompt and decisive action against the militants responsible for the attack on Pathankot airbase.
PM Nawaz called Modi to convey sorrow and grief on the loss of life in Pathankot terror attack, a PM House statement said. PM stated that militants always try to derail the peace process between the two countries.
Further, the PM was quoted as saying that Pakistan will investigate in detail on the leads and information provided by the government of India. Both the premiers showed resolve to fight out terrorism together through mutual cooperation, the statement added.
Sharif, currently on a visit to Sri Lanka, gave the assurance when he called Modi to discuss the terrorist attack. The two leaders spoke hours after a conversation between Indias national security adviser Ajit Doval and his counterpart Naseer Khan Janjua.
Modi strongly emphasised the need for Pakistan to take firm and immediate action against the organisations and individuals responsible for and linked to the Pathankot terrorist attack on the basis of specific and actionable information provided by India, said a brief statement from the external affairs ministry spokesperson.
Sharif assured Modi his government would take prompt and decisive action against the militants, the statement said.
On Monday, Pakistan had said it is working on leads provided by India regarding the attack on Pathankot airbase, which has been blamed by Indian authorities on the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed.
Modis office said New Delhi had given Islamabad specific and actionable information on the audacious attack, which came just days after a landmark visit to Pakistan by the Indian premier raised hopes of improved relations.
Reports have suggested that India has linked a planned meeting of the foreign secretaries on January 15 to action being taken against the JeM.
Sources said New Delhi had shared with Islamabad intercepts of calls made to Pakistan-based handlers by the militants who attacked the airbase. Details of the Pakistani numbers which the attackers called were also shared with Pakistani authorities.
Pakistans Foreign Office also said the two countries should continue with a sustained dialogue process and adopt a cooperative approach for tackling terrorism.
The US has said it expects Pakistan to bring to justice the elements responsible for the Pathankot attack without discriminating between terrorist groups during its operations.
The brazen assault left seven security personnel dead. At least six attackers were also killed.
Though Pakistan had initially denied any links to the 2008 Mumbai attacks, it subsequently acknowledged the conspiracy behind the assault on Indias financial hub was hatched on its soil. It gave several assurances of action against the perpetrators of those attacks, but there has been very little progress in the trial of seven suspects, including Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi over the past seven years.
