Srinagar: Clashes erupted between aggrieved locals and government forces this evening in HMT area of city outskirts after locals staged protests against unscheduled power cuts by Power Development Department (PDD).
Eyewitnesses told Srinagar-based news agency GNS that scores of locals today took to streets in the area and erected barricades. The protesters burnt tires and resorted to massive anti-PDD sloganeering.
They alleged that the PDD is resorting to unnecessary and unscheduled power cuts which have turned their lives hell. Despite our repeated pleas and appeals the PDD is not listening to us and not ending these torturous power cuts in this bone-chilling winter, said the protesters.
The witnesses told GNS that soon after ending their protesters local youths resorted to stone-pelting on CRPF stationed in HMT factory. They said that the government forces in return also resorted to stone-pelting and fired teargas canisters.
The clashes between the two sides continued till late evening and situation was tense when reports last came in.
