KANGAN: Government Primary school in Kangan area of central Kashmir’s
Ganderbal district developed cracks and one of its wall collapsed after a low intensity earthquake jolted the valley during pre dawn, sources and reports said.
They said that the Government primary school Satrina Kangan in education zone of Kangan of Ganderbal district building developed major cracks and one of the wall of the school building collapsed following a low intensity quake during the pre dawn.
The schools in Kashmir valley are closed these days for three months long winter vacation.
Locals told The Kashmir Observer that the school building is already in dilapidated condition and is already weakened by the recent earthquakes that were felt in valley. They said that the building had developed major cracks but due to morning quake one of the wall of the building collapsed.
This school is running in the present building since 1970. It is completely unsafe. We apprehend major disaster if a proper building is not constructed, locals said adding that if anything untoward happens in the school, Government would be solely responsible. During the recent past several earthquakes have occurred. Luckily our school didnt sustain any damage. But children are never safe in this building.
A senior Official of Education Department told the Kashmir Observer that a portion of the school building collapsed adding that the building was already declared unsafe this year.
He said that the same building will be auctioned soon and a new building will be constructed next year.
Pertinently a low intensity quake measuring 3.2 magnitude on the Richter Scale shook the Kashmir valley Tuesday morning.
