Srinagar: A furious mob Monday chased an Army vehicle, caught hold of its driver and handed him over to police after he allegedly hit a youth injuring him critically on Bemina Bypass in Srinagar.
Eyewitnesses said that a speedy Army vehicle bearing registration number 14d194474N hit a youth on Bemina Bypass. The drivers according to witnesses fled from the spot after the accident. However people witness to the incident chased the vehicle and overpowered the driver at a distance. The Army driver whom police identified as Sumit Kumar of 128 Bn ASC was handed over to police and accordingly his vehicle was seized.
Shortly after the incident scores of people raising anti-army slogans hit to bypass and blocked the vehicular movement. However, they decided to disperse after police assured action against the guilty army driver.
Confirming the incident, a police official from Batamaloo police station said that the injured youth was shifted to SKIMS and a formal case has been registered against the Army driver.
A doctor from SKIMS identified the injured youth as Shabir Ahmed Bhat son of Abdul Majid Bhat a resident of Brein Nishat.
Meanwhile an Army official said that the vehicle seized by police was a part of convoy that was on way to Srinagar from Panzgam. The driver was unable to pick up with the pace of other vehicles of the convoy and had lagged far behind. Unfortunately, there was accident at Bemina. The injured youth is normal and Army have been fully cooperating with the local police, he said.
