Srinagar- The Jammu and Kashmir government on Monday said it is examining a proposal to address the issue of the missing motorable bridge near GPO/Convent School in Srinagar, after the initial plan was altered due to technical constraints.
Responding to a query by MLA Ahsan Ahmad Pardesi in the Legislative Assembly, the Public Works (R&B) Department stated that a motorable bridge was initially planned and its foundation laid, but it was ultimately constructed as a footbridge.
The department cited a communication from the Chief Engineer, Irrigation & Flood Control Kashmir, dated April 2, 2016, which revoked the No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the project due to concerns that the bridge’s height would require raising road levels on both the Convent and GPO sides by approximately 2.5 meters, making it impractical for vehicular movement.
Asked whether the government intends to convert the footbridge into a motorable bridge or construct an alternative parallel bridge near Abdullah Bridge to ease traffic congestion, the department said the proposal remains under examination. The issue has gained public attention due to persistent traffic congestion in the area, with commuters demanding a long-term solution to the bottleneck near GPO and Convent School.
