Srinagar – Women separatist group Muslim Khawateen Markaz (Muslim Women Centre) protested against the illegal detention of youth, women and elderly men languishing in different jails of Jammu and Kashmir state here on Wednesday.
Women took to the streets in Srinagar, shouting anti-government slogans and demanding release of innocent people.
The chairperson of Muslim Khawateen Markaz, Yasmeen Raja, said they are protesting against the atrocities and misgovernance of the provincial as well as the federal governments, which they termed as human rights violation.
“Today, we are protesting against the atrocities and ill governance of the Indian government, which they have ordered for the illegal detentions of youth, elderly men and children of Kashmir. We have filed a memorandum to the Secretary General of the UN stating all these proble and we are also taking a copy to their office. As we want an immediate release of youth, elderly men, children and women of Kashmir. The UN has also failed to fulfil their promise till date,” said Raja.
Policemen and paramilitary personnel, who were deployed in strength to prevent the protest, swung into action and stopped them from moving ahead.
The protesters were detained but were later released.
The restive region of Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed numerous militant attacks, insurgency, and infiltration attempts from across the border in the last two decades, though militancy has declined over the past few years.
