CAIRO- Yemen’s Houthis have fired a hypersonic ballistic missile at Israel’s busy Ben Gurion Airport, declaring it unsafe for airlines as long as the Israeli war in Gaza continues.
“We warn all airlines that the so-called Ben Gurion Airport has become unsafe for air traffic and will remain so until the aggression against Gaza stops and the blockade is lifted,” the Houthis’ military spokesman, Yahya Saree, stated early Saturday.
The Israeli military reported that it intercepted the missile launched by the Houthis, just one day after intercepting two additional projectiles from Yemen.
Saree noted that this operation against Israel marks the Houthis’ third within 48 hours.
Additionally, the Houthis announced drone attacks targeting several warships belonging to the US aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman in the Red Sea, in response to recent US strikes on Yemen.
US STRIKES YEMEN
The US has conducted a series of airstrikes on various Yemeni cities, killing dozens, marking the largest US assault on the country since President Donald Trump took office in January.
Trump described the attack as part of a “decisive and powerful military action” in Yemen, vowing to “use overwhelming lethal force until we achieve our objective.”
He also warned Iran that he would hold them accountable for any future attacks on Red Sea shipping, stating, “We won’t be nice about it.”
‘ESCALATION WITH ESCALATION’
The Houthis emphasized that the US assaults “will not go unanswered,” pledging to “meet escalation with escalation.”
These US attacks followed an announcement by the Houthis earlier in March to resume attacks on Israeli ships after their deadline for Israel to allow the resumption of aid deliveries into Gaza expired.
The Houthis have executed dozens of attacks on vessels linked to Israel and US warships in solidarity with the Palestinian people in Gaza amid the ongoing Israeli war that began on October 7, 2023.
The Houthis asserted that the latest US attacks will not deter them from supporting Gaza but will rather “drag the situation into something worse and more severe.”
They vowed to “punish the aggressors in a professional and painful manner.”
Following the US attacks, Israel resumed its military operations in Gaza and killed hundreds, predominantly women and children, bringing the total death toll in the enclave since the start of the war to nearly 50,000.
The US has expressed “full support for Israel and the Israeli army in the actions they’ve taken in recent days.”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated: “As President Trump has made clear, Hamas, the Houthis, Iran, and all those who seek to terrorize not only Israel but also the United States will see a price to pay. All hell will break loose.”
