SRINAGAR: Two suspected militants were killed after a joint party of government forces engaged them in a gun fight near Sempora Pampore when they were reportedly travelling in a vehicle on Tuesday evening.
Official sources said SOG of police, 50 RR and 23 battalion CRPF had established a checkpoint near EDI Pampore after it received a specific input about the movement of militants at around 5:15 PM.
“In the meanwhile, a Tata Mobile bearing registration number JK22- 5943 passed through the checkpoint and forces directed its driver to stop. Suddenly, a barrage of gunfire came from the vehicle towards forces party from the vehicle, police said.
In the shootout, which lasted for about 15 minutes, two suspected militants were shot dead, police said. The exchange of fire also left two CRPF men and two civilians, including a woman tourist injured. All the injured were rushed to hospital for treatment.
The gun shots created panic in the area. Traffic on the busy highway, connecting Srinagar with Jammu, came to a grinding halt while the drivers turned back their vehicles and adopted alternate routes.
The injured CRPF men were identified as Parvinder Kumar and Muhammad Iqbal Lone. The injured civilians were identified as Asya, wife of Sheikh Shamim, of Bihar and Reyaz Ahmad Dar of Ratnipora Pulwama.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Kashmir Nitesh Kumar said that the slain militants were enroute to Srinagar to carry out a Fidayeen attack. He claimed that the duo was involved in an attack on CRPF convoy yesterday at Bijbehara.
Over the identity of the militants, he said that one hails from Pakistan while the other was a local militant.
He identified the local militant as Shakir Showkat Bhat son of Showkat Ahmad Bhat of Nowpora, Sopore.
