SRINAGAR:Unabated illegal soil extraction in Saderkoot area of Bandipora district from Karewas has created havoc and has raised environmental concerns among the worried residents.
Though the authorities claim that they have not given permission of the extraction of soil, yet residents said that the illegal activity has been going on in the area from the last 4 months.
Around 150 tippers are daily loaded at the Saderkoot area with the soil that is extracted by heavy machines and used at some filling site near Wullar Lake, residents of the area told KNS.
They said that extraction of soil has raised concerns as it causes landslides in the hills which endanger their lives as their houses are located on the foothills.
The residents said the extraction has been allowed by the administration despite a High Court ban.
Deputy Commissioner Bandipora Sajjad Hussain said that the people who are extracting soil have no permission from the administration.
I have directed the police to inspect the spot and stop the extortion of soil. We will stop the extraction in any way, the Deputy Commissioner said.
However, people have appealed the minister concerned to look into the illegal action, as we believe that the administration has been complicit till now.
