Handwara: Municipal Committee Kupwara (MCK) has turned the sole playground of Handwara town into a dumping site. Scores of youth while expressing resentment staged a protest in town appealing government to initiate action against the MCK officials responsible for the act.
The protesting youth who loved to play cricket, football and other games in the sole play ground told CNS that due to callous and insensitive approach of MCK, the playground has been turned into a dumping site where hundreds of metric tons of garbage is dumped on daily basis. The MCK has not only polluted the playground but they have also polluted the Nallah Talri that is the source of drinking water to 8 villages, they said.
When contacted an official from MCK admitted that youth have been deprived of using this playground on account of the garbage that is being dumped there. We have identified a dumping site at Khanabal Handwara and in coming months we will dump garbage there, he said.
