Bijbehara protests, family accuses of negligence
Anantnag: In a shocking incident, a 24-year-old lady has died allegedly due to medical negligence as a Dermatologist attended on her in the absence of a gynecologist at sub-district hospital Bijbehara. The woman delivered a dead baby before passing away.
Family of the deceased accused doctors posted at Bijbehara hospital of medical negligence and demanded stern action against the doctor who attended on the patient.
According to the reports, Surraya w/o Merajudin resident of new colony Bijbehara, was admitted in the sub-district hospital Bijbehara after she went into labour pain.
Sources in the hospital told Kashmir Observer that gynecologist Dr Aaliya Vaid admitted the patient at around 4:00pm on Friday and left the hospital. Her login and logout is registered in the duty roaster.
They said that Dr Nuzhat (dermatologist) arrived at the hospital for night duty. In clear violation of the norms, a dermatologist can’t attend gynecology patients.
Dr Aliya Viad and Medical Superintend allegedly forced the lady doctor (Dr Nuzhat) to attend night duty, a hospital source said.
“You don’t have to attend night duties as Dermatologist but as Medical officer,” MS Gorwinder Singh is believed to have told the lady doctor in his office at the time of framing roaster.
Official sources said that at around 4: 00 am in the morning, patient delivered a dead baby but the dermatologist Dr Nuzhat didn’t see the patient while as the nurses on duty attended the patient.
“After the delivery, the patient suffered from PPH and due to blood loss following which the patient’s condition deteriorated and was referred to the Lala Ded hospital Srinagar,” an officer said. On way to Srinagar, fearing trouble the ambulance driver checked in at SDH Pampore for immediate treatment and where from she was again referred to LD hospital.
Sources said that the patient died inside the operation theatre. Family of the deceased woman said that doctors at LD hospital told them that the uterus of the lady had got ruptured due to fundal pressure.
Dr Nuzhat on being contacted confirmed that she attended the patient. “Yes I am dermatologist and I attended the patient, she said. I tried my best but without required facilities like 24×7 operation theatre, it was difficult to handle the patient.”
She said that she has several times refused to attend night duties but the Medical Superintend forced her to do so. “Many times I refused to attend night duties as I am not a gynecologist but he (MS) forced me to attend duties despite knowing that I am dermatologist and don’t have necessary training for administrating gynecology patients but still I did what gynecologist is supposed to do,” she added.
When contacted Block Medical Officer Bijbehara, Dr Mohammad Amin said that he was not aware of the incident.
Chief Medical Officer Anantnag, Dr Fazil Kochak was unavailable for comment as his phone was in switched off mode.
Medical Superintendent SDH Bijbehara, Dr Gorwinder Singh’s cellphone was also switched off.
Meanwhile, Bijbehara residents anger flared up against the Health Minister Choudary Lal Singh and the state government for being directly involved in the death of the woman.
A case of murder must be registered against the Health Minister, Lal Singh, the residents cried. We have made several representations before the health minister and he himself visited the hospital many times but has failed to do anything.
