Baker murdered with a hunting gun

SRINAGAR — Police Thursday morning recovered a bullet-riddled body of a youth from North Kashmir’s Sumbal.

The slain identified as a baker, Rayees Ahmad Naikoo (22), son of Sonaullah Naikoo, of Tilgam Pattan had a bullet mark of 12-bore rifle near his neck.

“We have arrested two persons, Aijaz Ahmad and the owner of the bakery unit Rashid Ahmad in connection with the murder of Naikoo,” police said. “A case has been registered against them.”

Naiko according to reports had been working from last two years on a bakery shop owned by one Muhammad Ayoub Mir at Shilwat Sumbal. According to villagers soon after finishing his day’s job, Naiko as usual went along with his friend Ajaz Ahmed Mir (son of bakery shop owner) to a nearby wetland for hunting. “They carried a 12 bore-rifle along with them. Before hunting, both started taking photographs of each other with their cell phones. In the process, Ajaz posed before camera with the rifle while Rayess started clicking his photographs. Suddenly the gun went off and a bullet pierced into the chest of Rayees Naiko,” witnesses said.

They added that Rayees was taken to Sumbal hospital where from he was shifted to SKIMS where he breathed his last after a surgery. 

Confirming the incident, a police official said that it will be premature to comment on the incident at this point of time. “We have taken Ajaz into custody and he and his relatives are being questioned. We have registered a case under section 302 of RPC so far and investigation has been going on to ascertain the facts,” he said.

Meanwhile, the relatives of deceased youth staged a protest at Tilgam Pattan after the body was handed over to the family members after post mortem. They alleged that Rayees has been murdered and demanded a thorough probe into the incident and stringent punishment to the ‘guilty’.
