KULGAM: Amid protests and clashes a complete shutdown was observed for the third consecutive day in Kulgam town on Saturday.
Clashes broke out in the town after authorities failed to pacify protesters demanding swift action against CRPF personnel from 18 Battalion who according to them caused heavy damage to parked vehicles and houses in the middle of the Thursday night by resorting to stone pelting.
Protesters attacked government forces with stones while the later retaliated with tear-smoke shells. Eyewitnesses said that several persons were wounded in pitched battles between government forces and protesters.
All the shops, educational institutions and business establishments remained shut in the town while transport was also off the road.
Meanwhile the life in South Kashmirs Pulwama district limped back to normalcy on Saturday. The town had witnessed a continuous shutdown for last five days. Reports said that all the shops and business establishments remained open while transport normally plied on the roads. Reports however, said that Army personnel from 55 RR along with SOG Pulwama cordoned off Malangpora and Talangam hamlets of the district on Saturday after reportedly receiving inputs about the presence of the militants in these villages.
A resident of Malangpora said that government forces directed people to assemble at one place and started searching the houses. Sources added that Amy raided many houses during the dead of the Friday night at different hamlets of the district including Sambora, Alochibagh and Lelhar. However, no arrests were made during these raids.
