Kupwara has huge potential of agriculture sector
KUPWARA, OCTOBER 30: Minister for Agriculture Mr. Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjura today inaugurated a Mega Kissan Mela Exhibition at Kupwara. The mela was organised by the Department of Agriculture District Kupwara.
Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Mr. Abdul Haq, Member Parliament Mir Fayaz Ahmed, Legislators Mr. Bashir Ahmad Dar and Engineer Ab. Rashid, Deputy Commissioner Kupwara, Mr. K.R. Rajan, Director Agriculture Kashmir, senior officers of various departments besides good number of farmers and prominent citizens of Kupwara area including Mr. Ghulam Nabi Pundit Puri were present on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister for agriculture said that the government is committed for upliftment of the farmers of the State. He said in this regard several flagship programmes and welfare schemes have been launched.
Mr. Hanjura said that there is a huge potential of rice Zug indigenous verity of local crops as well and even saffron can be grown in district Kupwara. He emphasised that there should be double cropping and all the available land should be brought under Kharief as well as Rabi crops. Mr. Hanjura directed the officers to utilize full potential of the district as agriculture is the back bone of our economy. He emphasized introducing the latest technology in all productive sectors like agriculture, horticulture and other allied sectors aiming at increasingly the socio-economic conditions of the farming community.
The Minister instructed the Horticulture officers to distribute Kiwi fruit to farmers for its introduction in the district.
Minister for RDD Mr. Abdul Haq in his address said that the Government under the leadership of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed is committed for the upliftment of the weaker and down trodden sections of the society. He said Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal and Sheep Husbandry, Sericulture and its allied sectors are among the priorities of Government. He urged for evincing keen interest in these sectors for bringing change in the life style of people.
Mr. Abdul Haq thanked the organizers for organizing such mega event in the district and asked them to conduct such programmes in other parts of the district also.
Earlier, Mr. Hanjura, Mr. Abdul Haq and Legislators went round various stalls demonstrating modern machinery equipments, implements, tool, pesticides of various brands and together with their usage. They took keen interest in observing the usage of the modern equipments.
Later, the Ministers laid foundation stone of Agriculture complex at Kupwara coming up at an estimated cost of Rs.1.99 crore.
Member Parliament Mir Fayaz in his address highlighted the activities of the Government. He demanded for early release of compensation to the farmers of the District Kupwara whose standing crops and fruits were damaged due to heavy rains and hailstorm.
