SRINAGAR :Panic gripped Pulwama town Friday when gun shots forced people to run for safety. The market was abuzz with activity when sound of gunfire forced people and shopkeepers to scurry for cover.
No eyewitness was able to present a clear picture of the incident. I was walking when abrupt gun shots created panic in the area. I only saw two persons lying on the ground, who were probably hit by bullets an eyewitness said.
Giving details of the incident, a police official said that Special Operations Group men from counter insurgency squad and the men from CRPF 183 battalion had laid a naka outside the General Bus Stand. They directed a running Sumo driver to halt. As the driver halted, a burqa clad youth opened fired on the naka party. The naka party retaliated and during the exchange of gun fire two persons, including an elderly lady were injured. The burqa clad Over Ground Worker of militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen was over powered and arrested and a Chinese made pistol and sharp edged weapon was recovered from his possession, he said.
The police official identified the arrested militant as Tariq Ahmed Sheikh, son of Ghulam Mohiuddin, r/o Drachhu village of Pulwama district. Elderly lady Rehati Begum, wife of Muhammad Subhan, a resident of Chek Aarihal who received a bullet in her right arm has been shifted to SMHS hospital for treatment while another civilian Reyaz Ahmed Khan son of Muhammad Ramzan, a resident of Aarihal received a bullet in his right leg and is undergoing treatment in District Hospital Pulwama, the official added.
