Pulwama: People in South Kashmirs Awantipora town observed a spontaneous shutdown against the unprovoked firing by paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force personnel on civilians on Tuesday evening.
No organization had called for a shutdown in the town.
All the shops and business establishments remained closed and public transport was seen off the roads.
At least five civilians were injured after CRPF personnel stuck in traffic jam alleged opened fire.
An eyewitness Janaid Sheikh from Awantipora town who received a bullet in his shoulder said that he along with his friend Parvez Ahmed were travelling in a Tata-Mobile when the incident occurred. Few youth were trying to regulate the traffic while some pelted stones from Jamia Masjid side amid heavy jam. In response to the stone-pelting incident, the CRPF men opened fire on civilians creating panic in the area, he said.
A police official said that the day passed of peacefully and no untoward incident was reported from any part of the town.
