SRINAGAR: On the eve of 577th annual Urs of Alamdar-i Kashmir, Shaikh-ul AalamHazrat Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Wali (RA), Markaz-i Noor, Centre for Shaikh-ul Aalam Studies, University of Kashmir organised a special programme-yath waave haaley tsong kus zaale (Who can lit the lamp in this tempest) in the Seminar Hall of the Centre.
The highlight of the programme was an extension lecture Shaikh-ul Aalam te Kasheer. The Extension lecture was delivered by eminent scholar and historian M.Y. Teng
Highlighting the fame and popularity of the revered saint Hazrat Shaikh Noor-ud Noorani, Teng described him as the most towering personality Kashmir has ever produced who influenced every sphere of Kashmir society. Discussing the role of Shaikh-ul Aalam as a great thinker, intellectual and social reformer, Teng said that we find the basic concept of Humanism in personalities like Lal Ded and Shaikh-ul Aalam prior to the times Bakhti movement came in to existence. He said all sections of society have great respect for this revered saint and even the rulers paid homage at the shrine of Alamdar-i Kashmir from time to time. We find the original form of Kashmiri Language in the poetry of Lal Ded and Shaikh-ul Aalam, Teng added. He stressed the need for propagating and disseminating the message of Shaih-ul Aalam throughout the world by way of translating his works into other languages.
Reiterating the desire of christening of Srinagar Airport as Shaikh-ul Aalam International Airport, Teng said that throughout the world there is a precedent of naming public places with cultural icons and Shaikh Aalam being the patron saint of Kashmir, Srinagar Airport deserves to be named after him.
In his presidential address Prof. M.A. Wani, Dean Academic Affairs, Kashmir University laid stress on having reverence and respect of such saints adding it is important that we should act on the messages of such saints and great personalities.
While appreciating the functioning of CSAS Prof. Ashraf suggested that research on non conventional topics, which have moulded the Kashmir society should be taken up by the Centre.
Prof Bashar Bashir, Chairman, Markaz-i Noor while welcoming the guests spoke about the contribution of Shaikh-ul Aalam in shaping the Kashmir Society.
The function was attended by a galaxy of writers and scholars of Kashmir which include Prof. Shad Ramzan, Prof.G.N. Khaki, Prof. Muhmmud Ahmad Khan, Prof Muhammad Ashraf Shah, Dr. Altaf Jahangir besides Secretary J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages Dr. Aziz Hajini and others.
Two scholars Dr. Nusrat Jan and Sameer Mohi-ud Din who were first to complete their Ph.D and M.Phil Degree respectively from Markaz-i Noor were felicitated along with their research supervisors at the occasion.
