SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir has 24602 SPOs and 2709 VDC members. This is in addition to over 100 thousand state police, the government told the Assembly on Monday.
The state government has notified a comprehensive policy in 2009 for conversion of SPOs as constables/followers, the government said. As per the policy, SPOs have been engaged as constables on basis of their excellence in counter-insurgency operations, excellence in sports, ITI diploma
No such policy exists for VDCs.
Since the nature of engagement of VDC members is purely voluntary, the government said, there is no policy for their regularization.
