SRINAGAR: In a major initiative towards setting up advanced skill development training institutions in the State, the Jammu and Kashmir Government has formally set into motion the process for establishing a permanent campus of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in Srinagar.
On the initiative of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, the state government has conveyed its commitment to the Union Ministry of Textiles to chip in with Rs 67.47 crore as the state share for the Rs 325 crore NIFT project for which 160 kanals of land have been earmarked at Industrial Estate Ompora, on the outskirts of Srinagar.
Pertinently, the Government of India has, on the intervention of the Prime Minister, agreed to share the infrastructure cost of the proposed Fashion Technology Institute on 90:10 basis.
Out of the total project cost of Rs 325.36 crore, the central government share will be to the tune of Rs 257.89 crore, while the remaining amount will be provided by the State Government.
The NIFT Srinagar is presently operating from a temporary campus at IT Park Rangreth and is conducting certificate courses of 6-month duration in Fashion Apparel, Illustration in Design and Studio Photography.
