Srinagar- Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir range, Vidhi Kumar Birdi said on Wednesday that a case against some mischievous elements has been filed for ‘violating’ terms and conditions during the 8th Muharram procession in Srinagar.
It is worth mentioning that Srinagar police had filed a case under stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) against unknown persons for waving Palestine flags and raising objectionable slogans on the 8th Muharram.
Confirming the development, the IGP said, in order to maintain peace in Srinagar, it was imperative upon the law enforcement agency (Police) to take immediate action against the lawbreakers.
When asked if anyone had been charged under Section 13-UAPA, Birdi responded it would not be proper to comment on the matter till the investigation is completed.
“Some mischievous elements with ulterior motives attended the mourning procession. The representatives of the Shia community had formally consented to certain terms and explicit conditions that the government had imposed. But the miscreants broke those rules, so the police had to act against them,” IGP Kashmir told the media at Zadibal, adding, the details will be shared accordingly.
An open FIR 36 of 2024 stands registered at Kothibagh police station in accordance with Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) acts 223, 152, and 13 Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Several suspects, sources said, from different areas of Srinagar were rounded-up for questioning vis-à-vis their participation in the rally.
