SOPORE: Unknown gunmen shot dead a former militant Friday evening here while a 3-year-old baby, he was carrying in his lap at the time of the attack, was injured in the incident.
Gunmen opened fire upon the former Jamiat-ul-Mujahideen militant Bashir Ahmad Bhat son of Ghulam Mohammad Bhat outside his residence at Segipora Sopore, police said.
The 38-year-old Bhat, who was carrying his baby boy with him, fell on the ground and both were immediately rushed to the sub-district hospital Sopore by his relatives and neighbours. Bhat however succumbed before reaching hospital, police said. Family said baby Burhan was later shifted to SKIMS Soura for specialized treatment.
Police said that assailants first fired grenade at Bhat but it did not explode. Later, they fired volley of bullets at him, causing grave injures to Bashir and his son.
Soon after the incident, army and police launched searches in the area to nab the assailants, sources said. (GNS)
