The state in Jammu and Kashmir, especially in the Kashmir division of the state is increasingly disembedded from society.
State society relations are increasingly becoming more tense and confrontational with more sections of society becoming estranged from the state. This is eloquently demonstrated by the failure of the government to deliver on its promise of the much touted flood relief package.
Adding insult to injury was the states rather coercive approach to deal with the strike call and demonstrations planned by various segments of society and the political spectrum.
From a broader and larger perspective, the implied benefit of the coalition between the BJP and the PDP- more cooperative Centre State relations and hence smooth fiscal and relations- have not materialized.
Given that finance is the life blood of any economy and more so in a flood ravaged economy, a large fiscal transfer and financial package would have kick stated Kashmirs economy with ancillary benefits for all stakeholders. But now that there has been no indication of the much awaited and needed financial package, bottled up frustration is spilling onto the streets bringing together a cross section of society-traders, professionals and commoners- against the state.
The consequences of this development can only be stark: state society relations will increasingly become disjointed and disconnected impacting domains as varied as governance, economics of the state, social and political domains.
