SRINAGAR: Finance Minister Dr. Haseeb Drabus Delhi visit has elicited speculation in the state. The minister has been camping in New Delhi since the last couple of days reportedly for the centres special package for flood affected.
According to KNS, the Government of India is likely to announce a package for Jammu and Kashmir before the first anniversary of the 7 September floods.
Quoting an unnamed BJP minister the report said that the GOI will announce a special package for Jammu and Kashmir on the day. I cannot say that whether it will be flood rehabilitation package or economic package but yes surely I can say that the central government is likely to announce a package before 7th of September.
He said that Finance Minister Drabu is in New Delhi since the last couple of days and has met the top ministers of the GOI regarding the rehabilitation and economic package. During the meeting he has apprised them about the need of centers special assistance for the flood hit Jammu and Kashmir.
GOI has agreed that it will take immediate action on the package promised by the union government with the people of Jammu and Kashmir, he said, but did not disclose the amount of package.
He said that the package would include a considerable share for 2014 flood victims, who have not been compensated even ten months after the tragedy.
Drabu admitted that he was in New Delhi but refused to give further details.
It is pertinent to mention here that the previous NC-Congress government had sent a rehabilitation package of Rs 44,000 crore to central government for approval. One year on the proposal has neither been accepted nor rejected by the GOI.
Earlier reports suggested that the Union government has finalized a development package to the tune of Rs. 70,000 crore and speculation was rife ahead of Independence Day that Prime Minister Modi will announce it from the ramparts of Red Fort on August 15 . –With inputs from the KNS
