Poonch: A high alert has been sounded in border district of Poonch ahead of Congress vice-president and MP, Rahul Gandhis scheduled visit on August 26.
Rahul would visit Mendhar and Balakote sectors of the district and would meet the victims of recent ceasefire violations by Pakistan. The Congress leader will also meet the relatives of the slain persons.
This is for the first time that Rahul Gandhi is visiting this border district. Keeping in view the high profile visit, the security has been heightened across the district particularly in Balakote and Mendhar sectors, which were the worst affected by Pakistan shelling.
Both the sectors have been turned into garrison with additional deployment of forces, who are maintaining a strict vigil. The senior police officers are themselves monitoring the situation.
Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Mendhar, Shahid Nayeem, told GNS that the security has been heightened to thwart any untoward incident. As you know, this is Rahul Gandhis first visit to this place. We have made all the necessary security arrangements and we are monitoring the situation round the clock, he said.
The vigil around along the Line of Control has also been intensified. Due to recent skirmishes, 6 civilians lost their lives while dozens were injured. The firing also forced residents living close to the fence to move towards safer areas.
