Mufti Sayeed is a spineless Chief Minister
SRINAGAR: National Conference on Thursday condemned the house arrest of Hurriyat leaders by the PDP-BJP State Government as a measure to prevent them from going to Delhi to meet Pakistan NSA ahead of the NSA level talks between India and Pakistan.
NC Spokesperson Junaid Azim Mattu said Mufti Sayeed had started a new provision of arresting people in Kashmir on the demands of, and at the beck and call of New Delhi, thereby divesting the State Government of its law and order jurisdiction.
“The Hurriyat leaders were arrested by the State Government and then subsequently released from house arrest by the same State Government after pertinent and pointed questions were raised by our party and the media about the inherent hypocrisy of PDP in advocating tripartite dialogue including Hurriyat leadership while at the same time playing a pivotal role in stalling such dialogue. Why did Mufti Sahab arrest the Hurriyat leaders in the first place? Was he ordered by Delhi to arrest the Hurriyat leaders ahead of their scheduled meeting with the Pakistan NSA? PDP has no answers whatsoever. Their deafening silence reeks of guilt”, NC Spokesperson Junaid Mattu said in a statement issued from NC Headquarters in Srinagar.
The NC Spokesperson said these contradictions between PDP’s rhetoric while in opposition and its deeds while in power had pushed the State into a phase of political uncertainty and restlessness. “Mufti Sahab traversed a journey from being the self-proclaimed advocate of talks with the Hurriyat leadership to the Station House Officer (SHO) of the Home Ministry in J&K. He has extended towards his alliance masters in New Delhi a facility of ‘Arrest on Demand’ – which New Delhi utilized at will and as per their requirements. The fact that our Chief Minister takes instructions on phone on who to arrest and who to release is a cause of embarrassment and sorrow for the people of our State”, the NC Spokesperson added.
“Never has a State Government arrested Hurriyat leaders as a measure to stop them from going to Delhi to talk to visiting Pakistani dignitaries and delegations. If New Delhi had a problem with Hurriyat leaders meeting the Pakistan NSA, Mufti Sahab should have gathered the courage and integrity to tell New Delhi to prevent such a meeting on their own turf and on their own terms. Rather than doing that, Mufti Sahab happily obliged a diktat from New Delhi and ordered that Hurriyat leaders be put under house arrest so that they cant go to Delhi. This incident, this ridiculous circus of contradictions has yet again highlighted the extent to which Mufti Sahab is willing to stoop to hold on to his chair”, NC Spokesperson Junaid Mattu said.
