SRINAGAR: Residents within the Dal Lake who were provided land in Rakh-e-Arth, Bemina, Srinagar, Wednesday, reiterated their demand of relocation to a safer place.
A delegation led by Muhammad Amin Kano said that the land provided at Rakh-e-Arth is marshy and all the houses have developed cracks. The houses that had withstood the last years floods have begun to develop cracks and are unsafe to live in, the said. Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA)s negligent planning while settling us in a wetland has been giving us sleepless nights.
The area is part of wetland that was used as a flood channel. LAWDA did earth filling to certain level only, said a protestor, Mohammad Amin.
The residents said that Rak-e-Arth colony was allotted to the Dal dwellers in 2009. At that time it was no different from the Dal environment but the authorities had given expressed a commitment that the area would be turned to a Model Colony.
Six years have passed but not a single project has been completed, be it drainage system, water and electricity supply or sanitation facilities, they said.
