Our environment faces a serious onslaught because of the mushroom growth of some non-vernacular floral species including Russian Poplar, said Nazima Rasool, who has her research on Effect of Alien Species on Environment. The transpiration rate of this Poplar is very high resulting in the decrease in the water table.
She said the frequent cloudbursts may be attributed to the excessive water present in the atmosphere owing to higher rate of transpiration of non-vernacular floral species.
The school principal, Ms Imtiyaza Bahiqi and senior faculty member, Showkat Ahmad Laherwal also spoke at the occasion.
