Srinagar: The Directorate of Rural development & Panchayat Raj and District administration Srinagar organized a cleanliness awareness program entitled Mission Clean and Green Environment at the Boys Higher Secondary School, Palpora, here today.
Speakers at the occasion highlighted the importance of a cleaner environment and stressed the need to avoid using substances that inflict damage to it.
Students who showed an extraordinary interest in the event presented various programs that included a skit highlighting the issues pertaining to the environment.
A large number of locals also attended the event and listened keenly to the speakers. The students also presented various topics about Swach Bharat
They appealed the audience to install garbage bins and make the surroundings polythene and garbage free. They also requested them not to throw the leftover food and other waste into the water bodies.
Quoting verses from Holy Scriptures Cleanliness is half the faith, students vowed to respect the environment and conserve it for the posterity.
To conclude the program, the students took out a rally and raised slogans highlighting the need to plant vernacular species. The urged the villagers to chop down the alien varieties of popular trees that many experts have warned of serious consequences on the environment. Our environment faces a serious onslaught because of the mushroom growth of some non-vernacular floral species including Russian Poplar, said Nazima Rasool, who has her research on Effect of Alien Species on Environment. The transpiration rate of this Poplar is very high resulting in the decrease in the water table.
She said the frequent cloudbursts may be attributed to the excessive water present in the atmosphere owing to higher rate of transpiration of non-vernacular floral species.
The school principal, Ms Imtiyaza Bahiqi and senior faculty member, Showkat Ahmad Laherwal also spoke at the occasion.
