Cement Companies Feel the Heat
SRINAGAR: For the fourth consecutive day, the shutdown and protests in Khrew area of Pampore in south Kashmir continued with agitators demanding permanent closure of numerous cement factories operating in the area.
Residents say that the cement factories operational in the area are main source of air pollution which has affected 4.5 lakh kanals of saffron and agriculture land as well as wild life habitation.
They further said that the out of seven, two cement factories are running illegally in the area. The locals said that the cement factories have failed to install mandatory equipment for controlling pollution.
All the shops and other business establishments remained shut in the area while as traffic also got affected.
The locals slammed government for not acting against the cement factory owners and staged protests. The call for shutdown was given by Auqaf Islamia, Civil Society Khrew and Saffron Truck Union. The locals have threatened widespread protests if government fails to intervene.
