JCC Calls For Pen-Down Strike On Nov 5, 6
Srinagar, Oct. 15: Police today foiled an attempt by protesting state government employees to gharao the civil secretariat here and detained scores of them. The JCC called for two day pen down strike on 5th and 6th
November and civil secretariat gherao in Jammu on these days.
The state employees under their umbrella organization, Joint Consultative Committee (JCC), alleged government’s failure to implement the agreement signed between the government and protesting employee leaders.
A procession of around 1,000 employees, including senior JCC leaders succeeded in reaching the Press Enclave, raising slogans in favour of their demands and against the coalition government. However, when they tried to move towards the Civil Secretariat, police and security forces swung into action and prevented them from proceeding further.
Reports said more than 200 employees, including Muhammad Khursheed Aalam, Abdul Qayoom Wani, Abdul Gafoor Dar, Syed Ghulam Rasool Geelani and Fayaz Andrabi were taken into preventive custody.
Heavy contingent of forces was deployed on all routes leading to Civil Secretariat. Police arrested JCC spokesperson Haji Bashir Ahmad Trali along with others at Court Road after he had succeeded in giving a slip to the police at Press Enclave.
Police was ready with colored water canons to disperse the employees, if needed, who were trying to move ahead. However, they were dispersed by the police and security forces.
Talking to media persons at Press Enclave, JCC leaders Aalam and Wani said the government had crossed all limits to test the patience of employees and it was time for them to deliver.
JCC has entered into an agreement with the state government thrice. It (Government) has agreed in writing and ensured verbally for fulfilling their promises and commitments with employees but it has failed to act upon on it promises they said.
Employees are protesting in a peaceful manner to awaken the government but if employees are pushed further, they will take the shape of a flood which will destroy the walls of the secretariat will be destroyed, said Aalam.
JCC leaders warned the government not to test the patience of employees and to fulfill its promises otherwise the JCC will be forced to take extreme steps.
Government is trying to divide the employees but I want to make it clear that no such attempt will be allowed to be successful, Alam added.
The employees threatened to intensify their agitation if government failed to implement the commitments made to them by the government on their demands.
The state employees have been demanding raising of retirement age from present 58 years to 60 years, regularization of daily wagers, contractual, Anganwari and ASHA workers and payment of the Sixth Pay Commission arrears.
The main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Communist Party of India (M) and both the factions of the Hurriyat Conference (HC) had supported the demands of employees earlier.
