SRINAGAR: Kashmir Valley Saturday observed a shutdown against the harassment and discrimination allegedly meted out to Muslim residents of Rajouri by the authorities.
The shutdown was called by business community and was backed by separatist leaders, including Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and JKLF leader Yasin Malik.
Almost all shops, commercial establishments, banks and educational institutes remained shut in the city while the public transport also remained off the routes. The government offices recorded a thin attendance.
There were no reports of clashes between forces and youth from any part of the city and the situation was peaceful.
Reports of shutdown were also received from other districts of the Valley. A police official said adding no untoward law and order incident was reported from anywhere.
However according to reports, a large number of protesters converged in the main chowk Bandipore and held protest demonstration demanding action against the activists of VHP, Bajrang Dal and Shiv Sena for burning a flag bearing Quranic inscription in Rajouri.
The protesters amid anti-BJP, VHP and Bajrang Dal slogans tried to take out a procession in the district however, police stopped the march.
