United Nations- UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres urged the Security Council on Friday to spare no effort to push for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, for the protection of civilians and for the urgent delivery of lifesaving aid into the Gaza Strip.
“The people of Gaza are looking into the abyss. The international community must do everything possible to end their ordeal,” Guterres said.
The UN chief said he invoked Article 99 of the UN Charter because “we are at a breaking point”. The invocation of the article allows the Secretary General to bring to the council’s attention “any matter which, in his opinion, may threaten the maintenance of international peace and security”.
“Between 3 and 5 December – the two days preceding my letter – the UN could only distribute aid in one of Gaza’s five governorates,” he told the 15-member Security Council.
“All this takes place amid a spiralling humanitarian nightmare.”
He added that “there is a high risk of the total collapse of the humanitarian support system in Gaza, which would have devastating consequences” and result in a complete breakdown of public order and increased pressure for mass displacement into Egypt.
He fears the consequences could be devastating for the security of the entire region.
