Not easy to forecast weather accurately during Monsoon: MeT
SRINAGAR: Government Monday asked people to be vigilant in Kashmir Valley, particularly in low lying areas of the capital city after continuous rainfall coupled with cloud burst in some parts of South Kashmir, however, the MeT office said that there will be no rain till July 16 (Thursday).
The officials of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department say that
incessant rainfall led to the swelling of the Jhelum river from Sunday night. However, they said that flood threat will recede once the rain stops. There is no threat of flood but we dont want to take any chances, the officials said.
The water level at Sangam in Jhelum river till 5 in the Monday evening was 20.90 feet showing downward trend. At Ram Munshibagh it was constant at 19.40 feet.
According to Javaid Jaffar, chief engineer of flood control department the rise in Jhelum river has been caused by cloudbursts in the catchment areas of Lidder stream, a major tributary of the river in south Kashmir areas, adding that arrangements are in place to meet any emergency. So far we have asked the people living along the river banks of Jehlum to move to safer places, he said adding that there are minimal chances of flood, as the weather has started improving.
Director MeT, Sonam Lotus meanwhile said that it is not easy to predict about weather situation accurately in Monsoon season. The weather will be cloudy but it will not rain till July 16. There will be a spell of rain between July 16 and 17, he said. (CNS)
